About the Darwin CBD Urban Planning Forum

The Darwin CBD Urban Planning Forum is a joint initiative of the
NT Government and Darwin City Council. Significant work has already been done by the NT Government and Council to understand the issues facing the CBD and to identify future directions. The next step is to develop an action plan for the future of Darwin’s CBD.

The forum brought together stakeholders, experts, a cross section of residents and users of the CBD, planners, property developers and the general public to provide input that will assist in developing the action plan.

The key theme of the Urban Planning Forum was:

How should our city function?

The two main issues for discussion were:

  • How do we achieve better building designs in the CBD?
  • What should our streets, parks and other open space be like?

The forum and following community consultation events have delivered an action plan for Darwin that contains a set of specific actions around the design of buildings, streetscape and open spaces to help shape the future of Darwin’s CBD.

Darwin CBD

The Forum focused on the Darwin CBD as shown on the following map.

Map of the Darwin CBD study area, comprising about 2.6 square kilometres.
The study area comprises about 2.6 square kilometres. Key features of the CBD include:

  • The Darwin Waterfront
  • Smith Street Mall
  • The Esplanade and Bicentennial Park
  • Civic and State Squares
  • Old Hospital Site (Kahlin compound)
  • Doctors Gully
  • Cullen Bay
  • Little Mindil
  • Mindil Beach

The Darwin CBD area also has many areas of spiritual and cultural importance to the Larrakia people including scared sites, burial sites and land marks which represent the movement and location of various Larrakia Dreamings. The Larrakia people are the recognised traditional owners of all land and waters of the greater Darwin area, as well as the Darwin CBD, and have significant cultural obligations to the land as well as a 4,000 year old body of knowledge that goes with the area.
